Media

Who really cares what I like to read and watch and play? I don’t think I would if this was someone else’s website. And why is this under the “Hobby” category? These aren’t even hobbies. Suppose I need to put something on this site though.

Books & Short Stories

I really like philosophical fiction and experimental writing. Some of my favorite books include Wittgenstein’s Mistress by David Markson, Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, The Tunnel & Of Heroes and Tombs by Ernesto Sabato, and Labyrinths by Jorge Luis Borges.

Beyond that, I also really like books that examine the interconnectedness of science, art, thought, and culture at large, such as The Age of Insight by Eric R. Kandel, and The Invention of Nature by Andrea Wulf. Also, while I’m not the biggest fan of science fiction, I’m a big fan of Isaac Asminov, and The Foundation Series might well be my favorite book series of all time.

Substacks & Podcasts

I’m a bit of a news junkie, and subscribe to a number of substacks and podcasts that feed that addiction. Pod Save America and Pod Save The World (and Dan Pfeiffer’s related substack) are among my most consumed, and NPR’s Up First marks the start of most of my days. Beyond PSA and PSTW, the other big Crooked Media show I follow is Offline with Jon Favreau.

The rest of my favorite podcasts are a mishmash of topics that interest me. History of Philosophy Without Any Gaps is definitely up there. I also like podcasts about art, art theory, and art history — The Art Angle and Art Detective among them. Suicide Noted is not as well known, but it features interviews with suicide survivors.

YouTube

I didn’t watch a lot of YouTube until the pandemic hit, but it has since slowly crept its way into my daily routine. My favorite channels include DW Documentary, NativLang, PBS Space Time, The Atlantic, KunstSpektrum, 3Blue1Brown, ThorHighHeels, PhilosophieKanal, Contrapoints, Cambridge Union, New Frame Plus, Eva zu Beck, Geography Now, and Doug’s Dharma.

I also like Hot Ones… because of course I do.

Video Games

I like with well-written stories and characters, specially RPGs with heavy themes. My favorite games include Final Fantasy 7, Disco Elysium, Mass Effect 2Fallout: New Vegas, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, and Assassin’s Creed 2.

I don’t play as much as I used to and my days of competitive gaming are definitely over, but there was also a time when controllers paid for my school books — mostly Chess and Super Smash Brothers Melee, but also TLOU Factions, and Civilization 6.

I was relatively decent at the games I played: my peak chess rating is 2071, I used to be ranked as the #1 Melee player in the GBA (more on that here), and I was the runner up in the Civ 6 Imperial Cup.
